Los Cabos, comprised of the cities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, is one of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations, known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and breathtaking scenery. To help you get the most out of your visit, here are five must-know tips.
1. Plan the Season of Your Trip
High season in Los Cabos is from December to April, when the weather is cooler and drier, ideal for those who like outdoor activities. However, if you prefer to avoid the crowds and save some money on lodging, consider visiting Los Cabos from May to June, after this season starts the Hurricane season, and we don't think it will be easy to move your plans or tours in case of bad weather or similar eventualities. Each season has its charm and of course, there are activities to enjoy in each of them, although we believe that choosing the one that best suits your interests will make a huge difference in your trip.
2. Explore Both Towns: Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo
Many people don't even know that they are different destinations, can you believe it? And, although they are located near each other, it is a reality that each city has its own personality. Cabo San Lucas is known for its vibrant nightlife, beaches ideal for water activities and the iconic Arch at the End of the World. On the other hand, San Jose del Cabo offers a more relaxed atmosphere, ideal for cultural tours, and several beautiful photos of cobblestone streets, art galleries and exquisite cuisine. It is always best to explore both sites to get a better panoramic view of Los Cabos.
3. Taste the Local Gastronomy
Los Cabos' gastronomic offerings are the ideal fusion of fresh seafood with Mexican flavors typical of the region. Don't miss the fish, shrimp, and fresh seafood tacos, accompanied by a classic margarita or a drink with mezcal (which is highly recommended by locals in Baja California Sur). In addition, you can find numerous fine dining restaurants in the Tourist Corridor, which offer unique culinary experiences, perfect for a special dinner or just to hang out. Some places even offer shows during the meal, live music and general entertainment.
Something important to know if you are traveling to Mexico: Tipping is not included in the service, however, the culture of the city is to tip in restaurants, of course, this will depend on whether you liked the service or not, and at no time can you be forced to leave a specific amount.
4. Take advantage of Whale Watching Tours
From December to April, whales migrate to the waters of Baja California Sur, making Los Cabos probably the most privileged place in Mexico for whale watching. Participating in a guided whale watching tour will allow you to navigate considerably closer to these giant mammals of the sea. At the same time you will be able to learn about their migration, mating season, feeding, behavior, among other things.
Without a doubt, whale watching is an experience that we can't recommend enough and that you won't want to miss for anything in the world if you visit Los Cabos.
Some recommendations that we can give you and hope you will follow are the following:
- DO NOT invade the whales' space, although they are very peaceful animals, they tend to travel in herds and often carry their calves with them, which awakens a sense of alertness, and if they feel threatened, they may not react in the best way.
- Another tip is not to use sunscreen if you plan to swim near these mammals. This helps to maintain and preserve the ocean's marine fauna, contributing to these giants' ability to reproduce and feed properly.
- Do not give them food or throw anything into the sea. We know it is an exciting experience, however, we recommend you not to throw objects, food, or anything else into the ocean, this, far from being fun or good for these mammals, can be harmful and even deadly.
5. Enjoy the Beaches
The beaches in Los Cabos are some of the most beautiful in Mexico, however, some have strong currents, which, if not taken seriously, can be dangerous for swimming, surfing, or any other type of water activity. Check the safety signs, as well as flags and their color. Some of the beaches we recommend avoiding these situations are: Playa El Medano, one of the safest for swimming and water sports, Playa Palmilla and Playa Chileno, which are considered excellent options for relaxing.
Are the beaches in Los Cabos safe?
Beaches in Los Cabos are safe, the only recommendations we have for you are the following:
